After another few minutes of bickering, her grandmother finally gave in. “Fine,” she grumbled. “I doubt that boyfriend of yours would appreciate it anyway. At least you’ve got a pretty dress on underneath that awkward, puffy coat. Go. Have fun.” With an eye roll, Diana finally stole her opportunity to run out the door before her grandmother could change her mind again. While she was grateful for Delphine’s Christmas present to her, the beautiful dress was not the warmest thing Di had in her closet. Still, she knew it would make the dark-haired girl happy to see her wearing it, and it wasn’t like she was going to take her grandmother’s fashion advice for the party. At least this way she also knew she wouldn’t be under- or over-dressed.
The trip to the gang’s secret hideout was – thankfully – shorter than Di remembered. She’d only been there once or twice before, but she already felt pretty comfortable in her travels, which was good tonight as the blistering wind bit at her bare calves with a vengeance. When she finally found solace in the hangout, she gave a relieved sigh at the warmth that met her there before searching the room for Delphine. “Hey, Del!” She greeted enthusiastically as she rushed up to her friend and wrapped her arms around the girl’s slender body. If anyone had told her just how close she’d get to Delphine Crabbe when she started at Hogwarts this year, she would have been shocked and eager to see what the future brought her. But now, she couldn’t imagine her life without her friend.
Beaming at the other girl, she backed away, still holding her hands, to look at her outfit. “I love this look on you,” she said. Six months ago, she would have wondered where words like that were coming from, not used to having female friends – or any friends, aside from her books, really – but now, those words were coming naturally to her. “How has your holiday been?” The British word for “vacation” was slowly becoming more and more common for the American girl. “Do anything fun? Do anything…bad?” The blonde raised an eyebrow at the Slytherin girl, knowing she had an epiphany for finding trouble, even when she wasn’t looking for it. “Is Eli any better?”
